MS in Psychology - Western Kentucky University - seeking applicants

The Department of Psychological Sciences at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky is seeking applicants to its M.S. in Psychology – Psychological Sciences concentration (http://www.wku.edu/psychological-sciences/grad/ps/index.php). The program is a two-year, 37-hour graduate program designed to help students acquire the quantitative and methodological skills needed to successfully compete for entry into a Ph.D. program in Psychology or a related area. It also serves students who are looking for research experience and training they can use in jobs that require quantitative and methodological skills beyond the undergraduate level. Many graduates of the program have been accepted to prestigious doctoral programs or work in companies, research institutes, and laboratories across the country. 

The M.S. program offers research opportunities in a number of areas including learning and memory, perception, neuroscience, child development, clinical science, cognitive aging, social psychology, language, and emotion (http://www.wku.edu/psychological-sciences/research.php). Students work closely with faculty on their master’s theses. The curriculum is designed to advance graduate students’ quantitative and methodological skills, to bolster knowledge in the core areas of psychological science, and to foster professional development. Students are encouraged to develop their speaking and writing skills, and many collaborate with faculty on peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. In addition, students may obtain a graduate certificate in Scientific Data Analytics.  In the last 5 years, 100% of our students received financial support through assistantships and/or tuition waivers.

The University of Chicago Psychology department will hold a webinar on the process of applying to graduate programs on Thursday, October 22 at 4pm (Chicago time zone). We will provide information on how to write a good application generally and also specific info about the UChicago program. All students interested in applying to PhD programs in Psychology or related fields are welcome. You must register to attend, but there is no charge.  The registration link can be found here.

Interested in Art Therapy?

Ursuline College is holding information sessions about their Master of Arts in Counseling and Art Therapy program.  Formed in 1986, this program has remained the only one of its kind in Ohio that prepares graduates as licensed professional counselors and credentialed art therapists.  It is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and approved by the American Art Therapy Association (AATA).  Spring information sessions will be held on February 9, March 30, and May 18, and students can register at ursuline.edu/visit.

Fall 2018 Career Fair

The Fall Career Fail will be held on Tuesday, September 18th from 4:00-7:00pm in Upper Convo!  Please arrive 20-25 minutes prior to the event. Students who have pre-registered will receive a printed name-tag at the event. Students who are unable to register in advance are still encouraged to attend and can register at the door. Please dress professionally and bring several copies of your resume. Students seeking internship and job opportunities are encouraged to wear suits. All students are expected to be dressed in business casual attire or better. Career Services staff may ask students dressed less appropriately to change.

Alumni Spotlight -- Danny Lawson '17

Danny recently completed his first year of graduate school at Loyola University outside of Baltimore, MD.  He is pursuing a masters degree in clinical psychology that has a research focus, and he hopes to complete that program and enter a PhD program in psychology with the ultimate goal of teaching at the collegiate level.  I asked Danny to write a short narrative about his experience:

"I think going from my undergraduate degree to an M.S. in clinical psychology was a good step towards my PhD. Unlike most master’s programs, this one is research focused and its goal is to improve applications for PhD programs rather than prepare me to sit to be a licensed counselor. While these types of programs are becoming difficult to find, they are great for those who want to start with a shorter commitment, take some time to really discover their research interests, or who really want to reinforce their applications before beginning the rigorous process of applying to doctoral programs. Ashland University really does well preparing its students for a graduate degree and, as such, I felt ready for and enjoy my program. My program is really doing well to improve my doctoral applications and has provided me with many research opportunities I may not have otherwise had. I would definitely recommend it for those who met the aforementioned criteria."

Saint Joseph's University Hosting Open House for Graduate Programs in Psychology

The master's program in experimental psychology at Saint Joseph's University is a full-time program designed to provide students with a solid grounding in the scientific study of psychology. All students in the program are assigned to a mentor and conduct an empirically based research thesis under his/her direction.  Saint Joseph's will be hosting a virtual (online) open house on Monday, November 13th at 11:30. The University of Michigan’s Program in Survey Methodology (MPSM) is an exciting graduate program that combines aspects of psychology, sociology, statistics, and information and data science to provide training in topics relevant to the understanding of human populations. The program offers PhD and MS degrees through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

Students who graduate from this program can pursue careers in public health, business, public policy, consulting, and academics. Everyone is familiar with political polling, but survey methodologists also help with understanding the spread of disease, the risk of transportation injuries, the lifetime antecedents to a healthy old age, the marketing for new and existing products, among many, many career paths.

Adult Development and Aging PhD Program Now Accepting Applications

The University of Akron and Cleveland State University offer a joint doctoral program in the psychology of Adult Development and Aging. This unique program is one of the few Adult Development and Aging Ph.D. programs in the country – and the only one in Ohio.  Psychology undergraduate majors and individuals who have a master’s degree interested in pursuing doctoral training in basic and/or applied research in Adult Development and Aging are encouraged to apply.  Click HERE for more information about this program.  Applications are due January 15, 2018.

Pre-Law Society Meeting set for September 26th

Logan Alexander is serving as president of Ashland University's Pre-Law society and the group is just beginning to take off this semester. The society plans to bring in lawyers/ law professors, do a law school visit to Akron, and host several Logic Game Seminars with Dr. Louis Mancha to help with LSAT preparation. If any psychology students are interested in attending the meetings, the group would love to have you. Meetings will be held every other Tuesday, starting on September 26th at 6:30pm in Dauch 116.  For those that cannot attend the meeting, you can contact Logan (lalexan6@ashland.edu) to get more information about the society.

YSU School Psychology Program Accepting Applications

The Youngstown State University School Psychology Program is accepting student applications for the YSU School Psychology Program cohort to begin in July of 2018. Candidates will find that this school psychology graduate program provides comprehensive training which leads to an Ohio license as a school psychologist. Those with a background in psychology, education, and other related fields are strongly encouraged to apply. Applications are due 1/31/18, and the interview process begins in February of 2018.  A career in school psychology is very rewarding! 100% of candidates from our graduating classes passed the National Praxis Exam in School Psychology on their first attempt and secured positions in the field of school psychology upon graduation. AU Psychology Majors Are Going Places!

Melanie Ward and Muslimah Williams, two Ashland University students who graduated in May 2017 with a major in psychology, are beginning their graduate studies in Europe this fall.  Melanie is attending Utrecht University in the Netherlands, and Muslimah is enrolled at Swansea University in Wales.  Both students will be working toward Master's degrees in Clinical Psychology.  To the best of our knowledge, these are the first psychology students to pursue graduate degrees at institutions located out of the United States.  Congratulations!

Why You Should Do Research If You're A Psychology Major...

Many of our students get engaged in research experiences during their time at Ashland University, and these activities have, for many years, been a hallmark of our department.  Some students get involved in the lab as early as their freshman year, allowing them to accumulate a good deal of experience by the time they graduate.  Considering that the vast majority of our students who successfully gain admittance to graduate school have these experiences in common, those students who want to take the 'next step' in their academic career should consider the opportunities that are in front of them.  Click HERE to read an article that discusses the positive benefits of doing research in the psychology lab.  The article provides insight from Mitchell Metzger and Gary Lewandowski (who gave a talk at our campus a few years ago).  Enjoy!
