Alumni Spotlight - Blair Suppes '10

Blair Suppes graduated with a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Ashland University in the spring of 2010.  She tells us..."Currently I am attending Geneva College to work towards my masters degree in mental health counseling. At the beginning of my first year I worked as a graduate assistant at the Geneva College Counseling Center where I gained valuable experience in counseling college students. Currently, I'm employed at Western PA Psych Care where I work in therapy with children and adolescents with disorders and disabilities. Overall it has been a great experience and I feel that Ashland did a good job preparing me for this counseling program."

Alumni Spotlight - Theresa Ardiri '10

Theresa Ardiri graduated from Ashland University with a psychology degree in the spring of 2010.  She writes..."I am having a lovely time here at Geneva College, and am in the Mental Health Counseling track.  The classes I took last fall were Group Counseling, Statistics, Human Development, and Counseling Theories, and my classes this semester include Socio-Cultural Foundations, Testing and Appraisal, Career Counseling, Ethics, and Psychopathology. The classes and professors are wonderful here, and I find them to be enjoyable, enlightening, and exciting. It is interesting that for me graduate school is easier than undergraduate school at Ashland. I think this is because everything is so focused, and I am only taking classes that interest me. Classes are fast-paced, but I find as long as I put in quite some time studying and reading the textbooks, I do fine on exams and papers. This fall we begin our practicums, and I am being placed in the medical center here in town (Beaver Falls, PA). I will be working there once a week with clients who have schizophrenia and mood disorders.  My ultimate dream job would be to work in a veteran's hospital. All in all, everything is going extremely well, and I am beyond thrilled for what the future holds for me!"

AU Ambassador Program

The International Student Services (ISS) office is offering an opportunity, called the Ashland University Ambassador Program, which allows U.S. American students to better connect with international students on campus.  Students in the ambassador program will earn Global Education Scholarship credit, interact with a variety of cultures, and help new students adjust to life in the United States.  The goal is to bring both groups of students together in a positive learning environment.  If this is something that you wish to explore, please see Dr. Metzger for a more detailed description of the program and an application.  Applications should be submitted to Scott Parillo (sparillo@ashland.edu) in the ISS office (on the 7th floor of the library) by Thursday, April 7th.

Colloquium Examines Learning Disabilities in College Students

On Tuesday night, Dr. Bob Weis, Associate Professor of Psychology at Denison University, visited AU and presented a talk entitled “Learning Disabilities in Adults: New Approaches and Controversies.”  Dr. Weis shared his data regarding the degree to which college students carrying a diagnosis of specific learning disability met objective criteria for diagnosis.  We are glad to have the opportunity to bring researchers like Dr. Weis to campus to speak to our students, and we hope to continue to do things like this in the future.  Thanks to everyone who attended and supported the event!

Its time for academic advising!

Attention Ashland University Psychology Majors!  Now is the time that you should be getting in touch with your academic advisor to talk about future career plans/options/opportunities, as well as which classes you'll be taking in the fall semester.  The following dates are when students can register through Webadvisor:
  • Seniors - March 22nd
  • Juniors - March 23rd
  • Sophomores - March 29th
  • Freshman - April 5th
Also note that the time that students register on those days has changed from midnight to 10:00 pm.  Advisors were informed to tell students to avoid using the EXPRESS REGISTRATION function on Webadvisor.  Apparently, if any of the classes that you want to register for are closed and you've use that function, the system will reject your entire schedule.  IT is working on fixing that as we speak, but students might be better off not using it at all to save themselves a headache.  Good luck!

The case of Phineas Gage still gets attention from modern neuroscientists...

Phineas Gage, perhaps one of psychology's most well-known brain-damage victims, still draws the attention of neuroscientists more than 150 years after his unfortunate accident.  Click here for a recent article about Gage and how modern scientists use his story to shed light on how they conceptualize the functions of our brains.
